Korean Beginners (Full Syllabus) Course overview
Study Korean with our online beginners course for a comprehensive introduction to this captivating language.
Over 30-weekly evening classes, you’ll master the basics of reading, writing and speaking Korean. We’ll introduce you to the Korean alphabet, Hangul, and basic grammar, including adjectives, the SOV sentence structure (subject, object verb) and everyday verbs in past and present tense.
When you learn the Korean language at City, you will mostly focus on practical and real-life situations, from greetings and introductions to discussing past experiences or events. You’ll also explore aspects of Korean culture and etiquette.
We’ve designed our online Korean lessons to be interactive and informal and you’ll get plenty of practice by working in small groups. Start learning with these enjoyable evening classes.

Timetable
The course includes 60 hours of learning and is taught across three terms, starting in October and finishing in July.
October – December (Part 1)
One evening per week (two-hour lessons) for ten consecutive weeks.
Christmas Break
January – March (Part 2)
One evening per week (two-hour lessons) for ten consecutive weeks.
Easter break
April/May – July (Part 3)
One evening per week (two-hour lessons) for ten consecutive weeks.

Assessment and certificates
You will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate on completion of the course if you attend over 70 per cent of the classes. The course is not formally accredited.
Assessment
Any assessment will be informal to help you evaluate your own progress.
Teaching
We make our classes fun and interactive, with plenty of role-play, discussion and group work. You’ll also listen to audio clips and watch videos.
Throughout the course, you’ll work on pronunciation and intonation and learn about grammar in context. We set more comprehensive grammar exercises and reading texts as homework.
You will receive feedback from your tutor throughout the course, and we’ll assess you on an on-going basis through homework and performance in class.

Jaehee Cho
Jaehee Cho graduated from Korea University in Seoul with a BA in Korean language and literature education in 1987. She went on to study for an M.A. in Phonetics at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London in 1997. Her interest is in learning and teaching languages, especially the sound of languages and how to teach a language more effectively using both structural and communicative approach. Jaehee has more than 25 years of experience in teaching Korean.
She wrote some books ‘Korean Listening Skills’ for Beginners and Intermediate learners. Currently she is also teaching Korean at King’s College London and FCO Language Centre.

Hannah Giles
Hannah Giles has been teaching Korean for over 20 years. She started teaching Korean and Linguistics in 1999 at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.
She has also been teaching British diplomats at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office since 2005 and worked as a principal examiner for IGCSE First Language Korean until 2021. She also serves as Secretary for the British Korean Society.
Hannah read Linguistics at SOAS and graduated with BA First Class Honours. She was awarded a scholarship by SOAS to continue her PhD in Linguistics until 2004.
She specialises in Korean language and culture training, applying linguistic theories to practical language teaching, as well as designing Korean courses, exams and setting course syllabi.
