Korean Beginners Part 2 Course overview
In part 2 of our Korean beginners course you’ll learn how to ask and answer questions, talk about daily activities and discuss travel destinations. You’ll also be introduced to verbs in the past tense.
This is the perfect starting point if you have studied a little Korean before and you are already familiar with Hangul and the subject-object-verb sentence structure.
Our qualified Korean tutors will keep the class relaxed and interactive, using group work, videos and activities to assist with your learning.
Who is it for?
Designed for beginners who know a little bit of Korean (approximately 20 hours of learning). You may have completed part 1 of the beginners course or equivalent. See eligibility section for more details.

Timetable
This course takes place one evening a week at 18:30 for 10 weeks.

Assessment and certificates
You will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate on completion of the course if you attend over 70 per cent of the classes. The course is not formally accredited.
Teaching
Our mix of classroom activities is fun and interactive, and a great way to check your understanding.
Classes will involve discussion, pair and group work, role-play and lessons on grammar in context and pronunciation and intonation.
You will be given weekly homework to practise what you have learned in class.
Eligibility
If you’ve already studied Korean for around 20 hours, this course is for you. It’s the right level if you can:
- greet people and introduce yourself
- talk about the names of items
- request items at a shop
- talk about daily routines and current activities
- talk about locations
- use the verb “to have/not have”
- understand Hangul, the Korean alphabet
- use subject-object-verb sentence structure.

Jaehee Cho
Jaehee Cho graduated from Korea University in Seoul with a BA in Korean language and literature education in 1987. She went on to study for an M.A. in Phonetics at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London in 1997. Her interest is in learning and teaching languages, especially the sound of languages and how to teach a language more effectively using both structural and communicative approach. Jaehee has more than 25 years of experience in teaching Korean.
She wrote some books ‘Korean Listening Skills’ for Beginners and Intermediate learners. Currently she is also teaching Korean at King’s College London and FCO Language Centre.

Hannah Giles
Hannah Giles has been teaching Korean for over 20 years. She started teaching Korean and Linguistics in 1999 at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.
She has also been teaching British diplomats at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office since 2005 and worked as a principal examiner for IGCSE First Language Korean until 2021. She also serves as Secretary for the British Korean Society.
Hannah read Linguistics at SOAS and graduated with BA First Class Honours. She was awarded a scholarship by SOAS to continue her PhD in Linguistics until 2004.
She specialises in Korean language and culture training, applying linguistic theories to practical language teaching, as well as designing Korean courses, exams and setting course syllabi.
