The City Study Abroad Programme is a cross-School programme designed to give undergraduate students the opportunity to study abroad in London for a short period during their degree.
There are two intakes per academic year: Autumn (Fall) and Spring.
If you’re a current City student looking to study abroad outside of the UK, you should get in touch with your School’s Exchange Team to discuss outbound exchange opportunities:
- School of Communication & Creativity: SCC-Exchanges@city.ac.uk
- School of Policy & Global Affairs: SPGA-Exchanges@city.ac.uk
- City Law School: law.exchanges@city.ac.uk
- Bayes Business School: bayes-ug-incoming@city.ac.uk
What can I study?
On the City Study Abroad Programme, you can study modules (courses) across five of City’s Schools. A full course load at City is four modules.
For a currently list of modules available for our next two intakes in September 2024 and January 2025 please contact study-abroad@city.ac.uk
Please note that all modules are subject to availability. Places are limited. In the event that a module you have been approved for can no longer run, we will contact you to discuss alternatives.
Programme duration
You have the option of applying for either one semester (with a choice of Autumn or Spring) or for the whole academic year (two semesters, i.e. both Autumn and Spring).
Many students will attend when their home university nominates them via an existing partnership with the City Study Abroad Programme. However, if your home university does not have such a partnership, you may still be able to attend as a Freemover. We accept many Freemovers each semester.

Fees
If you are coming to City as a Freemover, the fees for the Programme will depend on when and how long you are studying for:
- Autumn 2024 Semester: £12,000
- Spring 2025 Semester: £12,500
- Full Year (both Autumn 2024 and Spring 2025 Semesters): £24,500
Please note: if you are coming to City via a nomination from one of our partner institutions, you will receive information from your home university about fee arrangements.
Visa requirements
Unless you have a UK or Republic of Ireland passport, you will need a visa to study in the UK. The type of visa you will need depends on how long you will be on the Study Abroad Programme.
- If you study for one semester only (either Autumn or Spring), you will need a Standard Visitor Visa. Many students will obtain this at the UK border, but some may need to apply in advance – it will depend on your nationality.
- If you will study for the whole academic year (both Autumn and Spring), you will need a Student Visa. All Student Visa applications would be made before you enter the UK.
City has a dedicated International Student Advice Team on hand to provide you with further information regarding visas.
If you do have a UK or Republic of Ireland passport, please make sure to mention this in your application for the Study Abroad Programme. It’s also worth flagging this up with us if you are in the process of applying for one and expect to receive it before you register on the programme.
