City St George’s, University of London is set to bring together creative thinkers from research and practice with the launch of the Institute for Creativity and AI (ICAI), an outward facing space for collaboration and problem-solving at the intersection of creative work and artificial intelligence (AI).

The interdisciplinary institute will work closely with funding bodies and businesses, possessing a broad outlook across different sectors including business management, healthcare, journalism and the arts. It will serve as a place to discuss key challenges that face tech-oriented creative work, and drive research-led solutions to overcome these tests. At the same time, practitioners and researchers can exchange ideas to seek strategically beneficial partnerships and funding opportunities.

The Institute has already forged agreements for collaboration with a number of prestigious international centres, including the Centre for Digital Creativity at Aarhus University in Denmark, and the Institute for Technology and Innovation Management at RWTH-Aachen in Germany.

A series of projects from across different Schools at City St George’s under the umbrella of the Institute are already examining how cognitive, social, economic, political, technological and other creative perspectives are developing. Current projects include Business Sparks – an interactive digital tool funded by Research England – that is helping support businesses in their pursuit of creative business modelling and strategy.

The Institute will be led by academics from across the University. Key personnel include:

  • Professor Neil Maiden – Professor of Digital Creativity (Bayes Business School)
  • Professor Charles Baden-Fuller – Centenary Chair in Strategy (Bayes Business School)
  • Dr Sara Jones – Reader in Creative Interactive System Design (Bayes Business School)
  • Professor Eduardo Alonso – Professor of Artificial Intelligence (School of Science & Technology)
  • Dr Enrico Bonadio – Reader (The City Law School)
  • Professor Suzanne Franks – Professor of Journalism (School of Communication & Creativity)
  • Professor Stephanie Wilson – Professor of Human-Computer Interaction (School of Science & Technology)

Professor Maiden, who is also Director of the National Centre for Creativity enabled by AI (CebAI) at Bayes, said:

“We are excited to launch this Institute for, at a time when creativity and AI have both become such major factors in the future of work.

“At its core, the Institute will promote collaboration and exploration for research between academia and practice, where ideas are exchanged for positive change.

“Within this, the Institute will work with businesses to help support creative professional development, as well as facilitating funding proposals to research the future of creative work in the presence of AI technologies, from across City St George’s and our strategic partners.”

The Institute for Creativity and AI will formally launch at Bayes Business School on Wednesday 9 October.
