City, University of London’s undergraduate student experience has become increasingly positive, according to the National Student Survey (NSS) 2024.

The latest measure of undergraduate student satisfaction, completed by 130 institutions, scored City at 80.5 per cent overall. This represents a rise of two places to 58th in England – measured by 27 questions – while maintaining 82nd position in the United Kingdom, across 24 questions.

The survey, one of the largest in the world, comprises an annual questionnaire sent to final-year degree students. It aims to gather anonymous feedback from students about their higher education experiences, including teaching on their course, access to resources and equipment, and student voice.

A total of six subject areas at City were named in the top 10 across the UK:

  • Health Sciences (non-specific) – 5th
  • Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering – 6th
  • English studies (non-specific) – 6th
  • Journalism – 6th
  • Ophthalmics – 6th
  • Finance – 8th

The ranking is based on the average positivity measure across the core set of 27 questions and relative performance in this measure compared to other institutions, both nationally and in London.

Alongside the high-performing subject areas, City has made vast improvements year-on-year from 12 months ago, most notably in the following areas:

  • Accounting (up 59 places to 36th)
  • Finance (up 23 places to 8th)
  • Sociology (up 21 places to 59th)
  • Journalism (up 17 places to 6th)
  • Music (up 14 places to 23rd)
  • Mechanical Engineering (up 9 places to 55th)
  • Midwifery (up 8 places to 23rd)

The data provides important insights to enable universities like City to continuously improve the courses they offer and ensure all students receive the highest quality experience. A number of City’s largest subject areas also improved, including Economics, up three places and 3.1 per cent in positivity, Law, up three places and 1.4 per cent in positivity, and Business Management, up two places with 2.2 per cent in positivity.

Professor Sir Anthony Finkelstein, President, City, University of London, said:

“The National Student Survey is an important measure of the experience our final-year undergraduate students have had at City and a key driver of the university league tables that students use to decide where they will study.

“I am delighted to see the positivity measure for every question increase since last year’s survey, and we are pleased that City has more than kept pace with the upward sector trajectory.

“Students are at the very heart of what we do at City. Improving their experience has been a key focus of ours over the last two years and my thanks go to both our students for completing the survey and providing their feedback, and colleagues who have worked tirelessly to help us improve our offering.

“There is much more to be achieved in the new academic year that will contribute to our continued progress, including, of course, our merger with St George’s, University of London on 1 August.”
