The Lord Mayor & Liveries Future Professionals Summer School gave local young people a unique chance to find out more about the professions of the future

By Katie Hoggan (Communications Officer (Corporate)), Published

This summer, City, University of London has welcomed pupils from secondary schools across London to take part in The Lord Mayor & Liveries Future Professionals Summer School.

Pupils aged 12-14 from local schools including Hammersmith Academy, City of London Academy Hackney, Mulberry UTC, City of London Academy Highgate Hill and City of London Academy Highbury Grove, visited the University for the week to learn more about their future career possibilities.

Funded by the City of London Corporation, donations from Livery companies and the Lord Mayor of London, the school offered three cohorts of around 40 pupils the chance to attend career-focussed sessions at City throughout June and July. Across the week-long programme, repeated each week with new schools, pupils visited different academic schools and departments across the University.

From a mock bail hearing at The City Law School to speed networking sessions, the Summer School sessions offered an insight into higher education and working life. The Summer School was delivered by City’s Widening Participation team with support from the Careers team.

Angela, a Year 10 pupil from City Academy Hackney, was particularly excited by the prospect of learning more about City’s Law School while attending the Summer School last week. She said:

I’m really enjoying the Summer School because it’s so engaging. I get to interact with other people I haven’t met before and network. We’re also going to the courtroom today, which I’m excited about because I want to work in law when I’m older. Ever since I was younger, when my mum was doing my hair and I saw Judge Judy on television I knew that’s what I wanted to do.

City’s student ambassadors helped co-ordinate sessions and offered support to pupils at the Summer School. Student ambassador Mia Ghir (Speech and Language Therapy BSc, 2026), said it was a brilliant opportunity for young people.

I think planting the seed earlier for young people is so valuable. I never had that experience when I was at school, so to have this time to meet student ambassadors and ask questions about university life is a great opportunity.

Some pupils might be the first in their families to go to university and they have no idea what that’s like, so I think it’s a crucial event for them.

Pupils learnt about climate change in a sustainability workshop and communicating with impact from the Careers team before visiting Better Space, a workspace partnership between Islington Council and City, to take part in a career carousel. On the final day of the Summer School students can take part in a ‘graduation’ ceremony.

On 12 July, one cohort of pupils graduated from the Summer School at the Innholders' Hall in the City of London. Catherine McGuinness CBE spoke at the graduation ceremony and told pupils:

Don't ever let anyone make you feel like you're not in the right place if you're sure you can make a contribution. Do something you are really passionate about and see where that takes you.

Dr Sionade Robinson, Vice-President (Enterprise, Engagement & Employability) said:

“The Inaugural Lord Mayor & Liveries Summer School has gone brilliantly. City’s vibrant community including expert faculty, leading practitioners and student role models came together under the direction of the Widening Participation team and Careers team to give pupils a unique opportunity to explore potential professions of today and tomorrow.

“It was a pleasure to see so many enthusiastic and ambitious young people join us over the three weeks, and to preside over what might be the first of many of their graduations.”

Ben Copsey, Widening Participation Manager, said: “The Widening Participation team has worked hard to deliver a Summer School that equips students with an understanding of the skills they need to flourish in their future careers. We want to help young people make the choices that are right for them, at the right time and for the right reasons.”
