Spanish Lower Intermediate (part 1)

In part 1 you will consolidate some of your beginner’s level knowledge before moving on to cover a new range of topics. You’ll learn to talk about your daily life, ask questions and give answers, as well as discuss plans and intentions. You will be introduced to new grammar structures, including reflexive verbs and the pretérito perfecto.

Our class sizes are small and welcoming. We use a mix of pair and groupwork to build your confidence speaking Spanish and overcome any fears of making a mistake.

If you enjoy part 1, you may wish to enrol in parts 2 and 3 to complete the lower intermediate syllabus and work towards CEFR A1/A2 of the Common European Framework Reference of language learning.

Who is it for?

Start here if you have taken our full Spanish beginners syllabus, have a low grade or rusty GCSE or studied Spanish for at least 60 hours. You should be already communicating at low CEFR A1 level. Check the eligibility section for more information.

Timetable

This course takes place one evening a week at 18:30 for 10 weeks.

By the end of this course you will be able to

• talk about daily life
• express frequency
• handle questions and answers
• express tastes, ask about likes and dislikes
• ask and give information about food
• talk about plans and intentions
• express obligation
• talk about past experiences
• talk about health.

Grammatical structures

• regular and irregular verbs in the present, verb like gustar
• reflexive verbs
• ir a + infinitive
• the pretérito perfecto.

If you attend over 70 percent of the course you will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate.

The course is not formally accredited or assessed, but your tutor will monitor and assess your progress via your performance during the lesson and weekly homework.

Teaching

We use a mix of pair and group work, role plays and conversations, which develop your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

The lessons feature the use of audio clips and videos, which help give cultural context to your learning and insight into current political and social topics.

It is the right level if one of the following applies:

• you can communicate at basic A1 level, according to the Common European Framework Reference of languages
• you have completed our full Spanish beginners syllabus, or equivalent course elsewhere
• you have studied formally for at least 60 hours
• you have a rusty or low GCSE.

You should already be able to:

• ask personal questions
• talk about your family
• give basic descriptions of a person or country
• talk about things you like to do
• use the present tense.

English requirements

You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
