Spanish Lower Intermediate (full syllabus)

This course is perfect if you are looking to improve your Spanish skills and communicate with more confidence.

You’ll learn to talk about your daily life, handle questions and answers, express tastes and make plans. As you progress throughout the year, you’ll deal with more complex vocabulary, like giving an opinion and talking about past events.

You’ll become familiar with - and comfortable using - a range of grammar structures, including irregular verbs in the past, reflexive verbs and adverbials. You will also be introduced to pretérito indefinido and pretérito imperfecto.

We’ll focus our content on real life scenarios and use interactive teaching methods to develop your reading, writing and listening abilities.

At the end of the 30-weeks, you will have reached CEFR A1/A2 level of the Common European Framework Reference of language learning.

Who is it for?

You should be proficient in beginners level Spanish (low CEFR A1 level) to join us. You may have completed our full beginners syllabus or have a low grade or rusty Spanish GCSE. More information can be found in the eligibility section.

Timetable

The course includes 60 hours of learning and is taught across three terms, starting in October and finishing in July.

October – December (Part 1)

One evening per week (two-hour lessons) for 10 consecutive weeks.

Christmas Break

January – March (Part 2)

One evening per week (two-hour lessons) for 10 consecutive weeks.

Easter break

April/May – July (Part 3)

One evening per week (two-hour lessons) for 10 consecutive weeks.

• pretérito imperfecto.

There is no formal assessment and you won’t receive a qualification, but you will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate if you attend over 70 per cent of the classes.

Your tutor will assess and feedback on your progress throughout the course, via your performance during the lesson and the homework you complete.

Teaching

We use activities with lots of interaction – including pair and group work, role plays and conversations. Practical tasks are set, such as making lists, which helps to solidify learning.

The lessons feature the use of newspapers, audio clips and videos, which help give social and political insights.

Prior Knowledge Eligibility

• It is the right level if one of the following applies:
• you can communicate at basic A1 level, according to the Common European Framework Reference of languages
• you have completed our full Spanish beginners syllabus, or equivalent course elsewhere (at least 60 hours of formal study)
• you have a rusty or low Spanish GCSE.

You should already be able to:

• ask personal questions
• talk about your family
• give basic descriptions of a person or country
• talk about things you like to do
• use the present tense.

English requirements

You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
