Spanish Intermediate (part 2)

Part 2 of this course prepares you for more in-depth conversations and discussions in Spanish.

We’ll spend time focusing on the subjunctive, commonly used in Spanish to express emotions, desires, doubts, or the unknown. You will revise and compare all indicative past tenses and be introduced to the pluperfect tense.

You’ll also learn to talk about causes and consequences and how to describe the characteristics and functions of given objects.

You’ll continue to work towards CEFR B1 level of the Common European Framework of language.

Who is it for?

Join us here if you can communicate at CEFR A2 level or have studied formally for at least 140 hours. You may have a recent or good GCSE or completed our part 1 of our intermediate level course. You will find more in the eligibility section.

Timetable

This course takes place one evening a week at 18:30 for 10 weeks.

Grammatical structures

• revision/contrast of all indicative past tenses
• imperative (negative)
• reflexive and indirect and direct object pronouns
• present of subjunctive
• reported speech
• linking words to express cause and consequences
• pluperfect tense
• present subjunctive in relative clauses.

Our courses are not formally accredited but you will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate on completion of the course. You must attend over 70 per cent of the classes to be eligible for the certificate.

Teaching

We use a variety of teaching methods, with an added focus on practice and participation. Working in pairs and small groups you will discuss topics, describe objects, and act out scenarios. Weekly homework is set to check your understanding.

The book used on this course is Aula Internacional 3 - Nueva Edicion.

This course is for you if you have already studied Spanish for around 140 hours.

It is the right level if one of the following applies:

• you can communicate at CEFR A2 level
• you have completed part 1 of the course, or equivalent course elsewhere
• you have a recent or good Spanish GCSE.

You should already:

• know how to talk about habits, customs and circumstances in the past
• be able to express obligation, prohibition, and the duration of an action
• feel comfortable recounting anecdotes or summarising the plot of a book or movie
• have some understanding of periphrasis, and linking words
• know how to use direct and indirect object pronouns.

English requirements

You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
