Project Management: An Introduction

Project management is an essential skill within all professional organisations.

Our project management short course covers the essential knowledge, skills and techniques required to successfully complete any project, large or small - from initial planning through to implementing, overseeing and evaluating projects.

This part-time project management training course will be delivered by an expert industry project manager over 10 weeks in interactive online sessions. You’ll be guided through the project planning process including setting up project aims and objectives, budgeting and timescales, implementations and completion.

This course takes place once a week at 18.30 for 10 weeks.

City Short Courses follow the academic year, delivering courses over three terms:

• Summer - April

Across 10 weekly evening classes you will learn to:

• Understand basic project management terminology, methodology and the role of project manager
• Understand the fundamentals of Gantt charts, Critical Path Analysis and PERT
• Appreciate why projects fail and how failure can be avoided
• Appreciate the effect of project management on third parties
• Understand how to produce a project plan with effective budgeting
• Understand project management in terms of its project plan construction, identification of appropriate milestones, budget and consideration of effective project review
• Outline basic tools and techniques of risk analysis and management.

Topics covered include:

• Project management and terminology, the project lifecycle
• Effective project teamwork, managing stakeholders
• Team development, project stages and project planning
• Budgeting and scheduling, Critical Path methodology
• Project control and Earned Value
• Risk management and effective negotiation
• Causes of project failure and how this can be avoided
• Effective meeting management and project closure
• Making use of Microsoft Project, an introduction (computer lab session)
• Project presentations.

Informal assessment will take place through group discussion and class room activities as guided by your tutor.

There is no formal assessment and you are not given any formal qualifications on completion of the course. However, if you attend at least 70% of the classes you will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate.

We do not ask for any qualifications to enrol on the Project Management short course, only an enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in the subject area.

You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
