Portuguese Beginners Part 1 Course overview
Part 1 will cover a basic introduction to Portuguese, including greetings, the alphabet and numbers. As the weeks go by, you’ll build vocabulary to describe things, ask for information and order drinks at the bar.
You’ll begin to understand basic grammar structures, including regular verbs in the present tense, as well as personal, demonstrative and possessive pronouns.
Our trained Portuguese tutor will use textbooks, audio and group work activities to develop your speaking, reading and writing skills.
This course is a great way to learn Portuguese quickly for a holiday or work, without the commitment of enrolling on the full year syllabus. You can join us for part 2 of the course if you decide to continue learning.

What will I learn?
While the emphasis is on Brazilian Portuguese, some reference to European Portuguese is also covered.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- introduce yourself and talk about your family, respond to requests for personal details
- master the alphabet and Portuguese pronunciation
- use numbers, ask for and tell the time
- order a drink and a snack in a bar
- ask for information
- describe things.

- regular verbs -ar/-er, ser, ir, poder, ter, gostar de, estar and querer
- feminine and masculine nouns
- personal pronouns
- possessive pronouns
- demonstrative pronouns
- preposition + article
- future in ir.
Assessment and certificates
You will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate on completion of the course if you attend over 70 per cent of the classes. The course is not formally accredited.

Any assessment will be informal to help you evaluate your own progress.
Teaching
To make the course fun and interactive, classroom activities will include role-playing, pair and group work. You’ll also work on pronunciation and intonation to develop listening and speaking skills.
The lessons feature the use of audio clips and videos and you’ll also learn about Brazilian Portuguese culture, including film, music and dance.
More comprehensive grammar exercises and reading texts are generally set as homework.
Eligibility
No prior knowledge is required for part 1.
You may want to start on part 2 or part 3 if you have a little understanding of beginners Portuguese.
