Chinese Mandarin Lower Intermediate Part 1 Course overview
In part 1, you will revisit some familiar subjects but from a fresh perspective, adding description to convey more meaning. You’ll learn to discuss seasons, compare the weather in different places and talk about the appropriate clothing to wear.
You’ll learn to describe objects and their functions in more detail, as well as give detailed directions with additional information. You’ll also learn to express similarities, make comparisons and talk about actions-in-progress.
In this module you’ll learn about one of the most important and colourful festivals in China’s culture – Chinese New Year, with all its activities, food and customs.

Timetable
This course takes place one evening a week at 18:30 for 10 weeks.

- gain knowledge about traveling, ticket types and payment systems

Assessment and certificates
You will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate on completion of the course if you attend over 70 per cent of the classes. The course is not formally accredited.
Your tutor will monitor your progress and give regular feedback, based on your homework and your involvement in class.
Teaching
This course takes a very active approach to learning – meaning there is lots of interaction with your teacher and fellow students. You’ll be challenged with questions, scenarios and problem solving, which will help you progress.
Digital learning is a key component of our teaching. You’ll have access to our digital learning platform, Moodle, which hosts lesson content and other course materials, so you can continue learning outside of class.
Eligibility
To join here, you should have completed our beyond beginners syllabus or studied for 120 hours with another provider.
You should have a solid grasp of Pinyin, understand rules on Chinese character formation and be able to write basic characters.
You should already be able to:
- discuss your daily routine
- talk about your profession
- talk about you friends and family
- use pronouns, prepositions and imperatives.
English requirements
You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
