Chinese Mandarin Beyond Beginners Part 2 Course overview
In part 2 you’ll learn the essentials needed to travel around a Chinese city. You’ll learn vocabulary for using public transport, including hailing a taxi and buying bus and train tickets, as well as booking accommodation.
You will learn how to recognise commonly used Chinese characters and improve your grammar by using question words or linking verbs with adverbs using de.
By the end of the 10 weeks you’ll feel more confident attending an overseas business trip or chatting with Chinese natives.

Timetable
This course takes place one evening a week at 18:30 for 10 weeks.

What will I learn?

Grammatical structures
- link verbs with adverbs using de
- make comparisons using adjective + complement
- use ordinal numbers with measure words
- use de to link a verbal phrase with a noun
- shortening of noun phrases
- understand question words used in statements
- use verbal complements wán and hǎo.
Assessment and certificates
You will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate on completion of the course if you attend over 70 per cent of the classes. The course is not formally accredited.
Your tutor will monitor your progress and give regular feedback, both on the homework and your participation in class.
Teaching
This course is designed to develop your skills in listening and speaking, as well as improve your reading and writing.
There’s plenty of time in class to practice your pronunciation, through role-play and the use of ‘drilling’ – where you listen and repeat what your tutor says.
We create a friendly and informal learning environment, where you get to know your classmates through pair work and language tasks.
You’ll have access to our digital learning platform, Moodle, which hosts lesson content and other materials - so you can continue your learning in between classes.
Eligibility
You should have studied Chinese Mandarin formally for around 80 hours. You may have just completed part 1 of the beyond beginners syllabus.
You should already be able to:
- understand basic rules of Chinese characters
- ask and tell prices and make payment
- buy food and drink
- compare style, colour and material of clothes
- understand the question word duōshǎo and how it differs to jǐ
- use some common measure words
- use comparison word bǐ.
English requirements
You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
