Managing Change (e-learning) Course overview
This course provides a holistic understanding of the principles and practices of change management in healthcare environments. It covers the fundamental knowledge of the theoretical concepts and models that underpin change management. Equipped with this, you will be encouraged to critically evaluate and apply these concepts to a range of health services settings at strategic, organisational and individual levels.

What will I learn?
The course aims to:
- Help you to understand and critically evaluate the motives and drivers on which organisational change is predicated
- Equip you with an overview and understanding of the theories and concepts which are the basis of successful management of organisational change
- Allow you to think reflectively about your own ability to tolerate and manage change
- Enable you to critical evaluate espoused theories and models and to construct change strategies within the limitations of such theories and models
- Allow you to reconcile the hard pragmatics of change with the softer human skills required for successful and sustainable change.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Analyse the different sorts of change, including planned and unplanned change, and the intended and unintended outcomes of change
- Evaluate the factors that affect change outcomes and critically appraise attempts to promote strategic change
- Demonstrate an understanding of the barriers to implementing organisational change
- Demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate different change-management options
- Understand the processes involved in managing individuals, services and teams, and compare different strategies that promote an effective and efficient delivery
- Critically appraise research and literature relating to managing change
- Set goals, plan a work programme and work independently to achieve these self- defined objectives.
Assessment and certificates
Assessment
There will be formative assessment and feedback on a weekly basis via the discussion forums. In these forums you will engage with your fellow students as well as the course leader to engage with a variety of topics concerning change.
The summative assignment is a 3,000-word essay in which you will analyse a change process in your workplace, focusing on the external motives for change, internal consequences of the process, tools and techniques employed, and the impact on you and your team.
On successful completion of the course you will be awarded 15 credits at level 6.
Students will receive a certificate of completion.
This course is provided by the School of Health & Psychological Sciences.

Non-EEA students can only apply as part of a programme, not as a stand-alone course
Entry requirements for BSc Health Sciences (online) programme:
- 120 Level 4 credit points and 120 Level 5 credit points in healthcare related subjects.
Entry requirements for study as a stand-alone course:
- Current registration with a professional and regulatory body (healthcare).
English requirements
If your first language is not English, one of the following is required:
- A first degree from a UK university
- A first degree from an overseas institution recognised by City, University of London as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, for example, from institutions from Australia, Canada or the United States of America.
- International English Language Test Service (IELTS) a score of 7.0 is required with no subtest below 7.0
- Pearson Test of English (Academic) score 72 required
- TOEFL 100 overall with 24 in Writing, 20 in Listening, 19 Reading and 20 Speaking
- Other evidence of proficiency in the English language, which satisfies the board of studies concerned, including registration with your professional regulator.
