Overview
Dr Steven Buckley is a Lecturer in Media and Communication at the Sociology & Criminology Department at City University, London, UK.
Steven's work focuses on social media platforms, particularly video streaming platforms such as YouTube and Twitch. In combination with media theory, Steven also looks political communication within digital spaces, dealing primarily with US and UK politics. Of particular interest is the concept of authenticity.
Currently Steven is writing a book called 'Understanding Social Media and Democracy' for Elgar publishing and their Understanding series. It will cover a broad range of issues such as media fragmentation, authenticity, streaming and objectivity.
Prior to working at City, Steven taught at both Cardiff University and the University of the West of England, teaching across a wide range of media and journalism modules including: History of Mass Communication, Understanding Journalism, Media Scholarship, Spin Unspun, Popular Music and Culture, Doing Media Research, Branding and Identity, Activism and the Media and Researching Journalism and Public Communication.
Steven has provided opinions and thoughts for a range of national and international publications such as New Scientist, The Independent, Tatler, Wired, The New Statesman and Buzzfeed.
