Overview
Dr Sathiskumar Anusuya Ponnusami works as a Senior Lecturer in Structural Mechanics (Aeronautics) in the Department of Engineering at City, University of London since October 2018. Prior to City, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Solid Mechanics Group at the University of Oxford, where he was involved in developing computational models and data-driven machine learning tools for advanced composite fan blades within the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre. He serves as the Programme Director for Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering Programmes. He was the Deputy Admissions Tutor for Undergraduate Engineering Programmes between 2019 and 2023.
He graduated with his PhD from Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Netherlands. His doctoral research centered around computational modelling of fracture and healing in self-healing turbine composite coatings for aerospace applications supported by collaborative experimental development with material scientists. He also served as the leader of the team MultiFun, that won the £ 30,000 Airbus-UNESCO Fly Your Ideas Global Challenge 2015. He is also the awardee of the NLF Dutch Aerospace Award 2015 (University category, Netherlands), ITMA Future Materials Awards 2015 (WTiN, UK) and ICSHM Young Scientist Award 2013.
His research interests encompass computational modelling of damage and failure in multifunctional composite materials while his ongoing research exploits utilising machine learning tools for structural mechanics and composite materials engineering problems.
Some of his current research projects include:
(1) EPSRC funded Project on hybrid Deep Learning- FEA technique for fracture prediction in material systems (DelFE). Role: Principal Investigator. Collaboration with EPFL and University of Florida to develop faster fracture prediction tools in complex material systems through hybridising FEA with deep learning architectures.
(2) Royal Society Newton Grant funded project on Physics-informed deep learning and Digital Twin tools for active vibration control of aerospace structures using integrated sensor-actuator material systems
(3) IMechE's Astridge Scholarship funded project on Artificial Intelligence-driven Structural Health Monitoring in aerospace composite structures
(4) CERES Industrial Consortium funded project on Design and optimization of screw compressor rotor profiles using generative deep learning (Conditional GANs)
(5) PhD project on Accelerating large-scale crystal plasticity simulations in steels using deep learning-driven surrogate constitutive models
His main teaching activities cover subjects such as mechanics of materials, structural analysis, finite element method and composites at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
