About
Overview
Though the themes of my research are diverse, the connecting thread is to explore how the power of corporations shapes, and is shaped by, capitalism’s manifold crises. My research has traced the rise of giant investment banks from the Volcker Shock to the post-global financial crisis reforms under the Volcker Rule. It has revealed how the public finances, especially public debt and taxation, have come to serve the interests of wealthy households and large corporations. It has mapped the entanglements of the Big Three asset managers – BlackRock, Vanguard and State Street – in the carbon economy and detailed their role in climate obstructionism. It has developed new ways of measuring the so-called financialization of shadowy commodity trading firms implicated in market volatility and ecological devastation. And it has shown how large corporations use indebtedness (leverage) to gain a competitive foothold over smaller ones.
My current research marks a continuation of this research agenda, analyzing corporate power against the backdrop of the mental health crisis. Here I am investigating Silicon Valley's anti-ageing movement as a manifestation of the death-denying pathologies of contemporary capitalism. I am also examining the business models of companies that are racing to develop and patent psychedelic compounds and therapies for the treatment of various psychiatric disorders.
I welcome supervision requests from prospective PhD students researching the political economy aspects of:
• Corporate power
• Biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, psychedelics
• Death and anti-ageing
• Mental health
• Energy, food, raw materials
