Overview
Julie joined The City Law School in 2001. She is the Deputy Course Director (Students) and currently the co-ordinator of Alternative Dispute Resolution and the Deputy Co-ordinator of Commercial Law. Julie teaches Advocacy, Drafting, Opinion Writing, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Civil Litigation, Commercial Law and Company law. During her time at the School, she has co-ordinated Drafting, Commercial law, Company Law and Landlord and Tenant and designed many of the integrated civil course materials for the launch of the BPTC in 2010. She also supervises and assesses students on the LLM in Professional Legal Skills programme.
Julie was called to the Bar in 1989 and during her 12 years in practice at 3 Paper Buildings and Goldsmith Buildings (now merged with Hardwicke Chambers), she undertook a wide variety of civil and commercial work and has extensive experience in claims arising out of contracts for the sale and supply of goods and services, contracts of insurance, construction contracts and contracts of guarantee and indemnity and partnership disputes. Julie particularly specialised in all aspects of Company and Insolvency, including validation proceedings, proceedings to recover corporate assets, administration, unfair prejudice and directors' disqualification proceedings. Her other particular area of practice was property litigation and commercial and residential landlord and tenant, especially business tenancy renewals and commercial dilapidation claims.
Julie is particularly interested in all aspects of Alternative Dispute Resolution, particularly Mediation, and Expert Determination, Civil Litigation and Commercial and Company Law. She is a co-author of The Jackson ADR Handbook from The Judicial College, The Civil Justice Council and The Civil Mediation Council (OUP, 2013), and a co-author of A Practical Approach to Alternative Dispute Resolution (OUP, 2nd edition, 2012). She is the Series Editor for the Bar Professional Training Course manuals published by OUP, a contributing author of the Professional Conduct manual and the Remedies manual. She is also a contributing author of Blackstone's Civil Practice 2013.
Julie is also an experienced Continuing Professional Development (CPD) trainer, and has trained many solicitors in advocacy on the "Higher Rights" programme, and clients have included leading City Law firms, the Association of Law Costs Draftsmen and The Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys. She has also delivered CPD courses in Evidence, Case Preparation, Advanced Drafting and Civil Litigation to leading City practices, as well as expert witness familiarisation training.
